Miscellaneous Urine Colors

Although shades of red and brown are the most common abnormal colors associated with urine in dogs and cats, a variety of other colors can occur in rare instances. Examples of such variations include the infrequent occurrence of green or blue urine with Pseudomonas infection; milky white urine resulting from white blood cells, lipids, or crystals; and orange urine with sulfasalazine administration (Bartges 2005). Abnormal urine colors should be investigated by reviewing patient history and physical findings, performing a complete urinalysis, and performing other diagnostic procedures such as urine culture and hematology or biochemistry profiles as indicated.
